ENG 484: Poetic Craft and Creativity

Prof. Kutchins 3 credits

This course invites you into the working writing spaces of poets, and will take you as intimately into their poetic minds as language can take us. We will read several books by poets about poetry and poetics, and several books of poems by established contemporary poets, a few of whom will actually be coming to JMU for a Furious Flower event in March 2010.  This course is an exploration of poetics, poetic sensibility, craft and creative process.  You will apply and extend what you read and study to your own creativity.  The writing you do for this class will be a few academic, critical papers, and mostly original poems and process papers. The emphasis in class time will be on discussing and applying the readings, and experiential, creative writing activities, rather than critiquing your original poems. Creative Writing Minors will receive credit in the theory/support course category of the Minor.
