Dr. Cash 3 credits
English 410/510 will be a seminar on the work (fiction and dramatic) of Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy was born of Northern parents but grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. His work is particularly interesting in that he started in the Southern tradition but gradually moved West; as he made his geographical move, his work broadened too in thematic content. Never a promoter of his own work, McCarthy is arguably the greatest living fiction writer in the US. In the early 1990s, Larry Brown, stated that McCarthy deserved the Nobel prize in literature. Students in this class will read and study most of McCarthy’s work from early to late; journals on all novels and four formal papers (1,000 words each) required as well as a 2,500 word research article from undergraduate students. Additional requirements for graduate students.
