GENG 370: Exploring Gay and Lesbian Literature

Dr. Goode 3 credits

The goals of this course are to provide grounding in GLBTQ literary and social history, and to explore through our texts (both fiction and film) the construction of queer identities and queer communities.  As an understanding of our history is vital in understanding our present, the texts we will read have been selected as representative of watershed moments of Western GLBTQ history – 1920s Paris, the Harlem Renaissance, Stonewall, the women’s movement of the late 60s and early 70s, AIDS activism of the 80s, and the transgender debates since the 80s.  Selected texts will include: Giovanni’s Room, The Well of Loneliness, Maurice, Becoming a Man, Funny Boy, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Dancer from the Dance, Stone Butch Blues, and Fun Home. As an additional mandatory component to the course, on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm we will have screenings of movies and documentaries relevant to both queer history and queer texts.
