English 299 is the gateway course to the English major. It is a rigorous introduction to research and writing and to the skills and methods required by those activities. The course is designed to help students understand what the major offers and what we expect students to do in and with it. This semester we will address three basic questions: (1) how the texts we read are created, transmitted, and received; (2) how scholars respond to, understand, and write about those texts; and (3) why scholars do what they do with texts and what value these activities provide, both inside and outside of the academy. To help accomplish these goals, we will discuss strategies for reading, writing, and researching literary texts, with a particular focus upon British and American modernism and the Renaissance.
