As a gateway class, the course objective is to make students ready to read, think, and write as English majors.  It teaches how to transform vague feelings into powerful ideas and how to make opinions into arguments and arguments into interpretations.  It teaches modesty and confidence in the same stroke.   In-class exams and out-of-class essays.  Considerable emphasis on participation.  Random stories and free cookies at various points along the way.
