This course introduces General Education students to major authors, literary forms, and movements in American literature since 1865.

Texts:
The Norton Anthology of American Literature 1865 to the Present, Package 2.  6th Edition.  2003.  Nina Baym, Editor.
Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man.  James Weldon Johnson. 1912.

Course Goals:
* To foster familiarity with various American literary genres, figures, and movements since 1865
* To practice critical thinking and writing skills
* To foster critical reading skills through close analysis of literary texts

Assignments and Grading:
25% reading quizzes/participation                         10% group presentation
25% exams (3)                                                           30% essays (3)
10% final exam
