Scoring

Design competition scoring will be based on a combination of the Performance Score minus the Budget Score.  The goal, therefore, is to design and construct a device that maximizes function while keeping the construction budget to a minimum.

  • Performance
Objective: The Performance Score will be based on the BEST single trial score obtained during the firing test of the team device.  Launching the Duke dog through the hula hoop and sticking the landing will result in a maximum score of 200 points.
Performance Score: 0 to 200 points
  • Budget
Objective: Each team will complete the provided FLING Storeroom Order Form to order materials and supplies for their device construction.  The Budget Score is calculated automatically on the Order Form.  (Teams may bring specific items listed under “Materials and Supplies” that do not add to the budget and do not affect the BUDGET SCORE.) The Budget Score will be subtracted from the Performance Score
Budget Score: 0 to 50 points
  • Design Quality, Design and Creativity:
Objective: Teams in each Firing Room will be judged on the quality, design and creativity of their device.  A “Best Design” will be awarded for each FLING Firing Room.
  • Overall Competition Winners:
Overall winners of the FLING event will be determined by their team’s BEST Performance Score minus their Budget Score.  Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place across all three FLING Firing Rooms.
