Minutes – the Emeriti Association Executive Committee –
August 12, 2006

 

Present: Nancy O”Hare, Frank Palocsay, Al Mitchell, Martha Caldwell, Mary Lou Wylie, Bill Wilson

 

Approval of minutes as distributed.  Corrections - the recipient colleges for the emeriti grant were omitted – Business and then Fine Arts – and the  motion to have the faculty senate handle the grant was defeated.

 

Treasurer’s report. Al mitchell reported $2019.23 in savings, $3,298.95 in checking and  $5500 in the foundation. This should be $8500 – reflecting a donation of $3000 yesterday. A report from tom shaeffer was distributed which showed the grant at $3900. The cost of the picnic was $109.89

 

Special reports. Nancy has met with lin and thanked him for matching our funds. Indeed $1000 has already been transferred to the college of business. Lin wants the grant announced at the geneal faculty meeting  which nancy will do.

 

Old business;

Guidelines for the grant.  After some discussion it was decided that the guidelines shoulsd be as follows:

The recipient should be

   full time faculty

   tenured

   not hold an endowed chairs or a funded professorships

The funds may be used as reimbursement

    for further  education

    to enhanc e teaching

    travel for professional development

     research/creative projects

     other professional expenses

 

These guidelines were approved by the executive board present

Frank requested that off the record faculty be selected who need encouragement. It should not be considered a reward

 

The recipient and his dean will be invited to the October luncheon

 

Other old business. Nancy has developed a news letter which include dues notification, invitation to join etc..

She reported that Sally Lance is trying to find a JMU musuc group whp can perform at the xmas meeting. Cameron’s group and the daughters of song were suggested.

Judy shaw is retiring at the end of august. The emeriti will give her a cashiers check for $100

Ben De Graff, the October speaker, will receive an honorarium of $50

 

Help will be needed with the mailing. Nancy will e-mail us when – anyday but Wednesday

 

Nancy distributed a plan for the year with  activity, coordinator and completion date listed

 

1. Award first legacy grant , exec./comm.  August 25, 2006

2, distribute first newsletter , o’hare   sept.. 1, 2006

3. Conduct member survey, o’hare  oct.31, 2006

4. Organize interest groups, o’hare/wylie  nov.15, 2006

5. Coordinate intrerest groups, wylie ongoing

6 plan year’s programs,  program committee nov. 15, 2006

7. Plan special events  wylie/comm dec.31, 2006
