On June 30, 2008, James Madison University closed the books on The Madison Century: A Campaign for James Madison University, our first-ever comprehensive capital campaign. We exceeded our goal of $50 million by a significant amount - with a total of $70 million committed. This is wonderful news.
Just as encouraging as the total dollars raised is the change in culture at Madison. Now we know that we can do this. James Madison University can join its peer institutions in raising enough private support to carry on its mission.
To give you a clear picture of just how much the Madison culture has changed during this historic campaign, here is a very compelling statistic: of the 228 donors making major gifts during the Madison Century campaign, nearly 90 percent had never before given at that level to the university.
So in just six years a new culture of giving at Madison has taken root and begun to flourish. This is very good news as funding for higher education continues to change.
The close of the Madison Century campaign signifies the end of one incredible era and beginning of another at Madison. It is with great pride that we can claim Madison truly has come of age. And it is with enormous gratitude that we thank you for your part in this success. What is most exciting is that we’re just getting started.
