Faculty Chairs

To establish an endowed faculty chair, a minimum gift commitment of $1 million is required.  An endowed chair may be restricted to a specific field of study within an academic department or remain undesignated to allow the University President or College Dean the greatest amount of flexibility in awarding the chair where it is needed most.

 

The primary purpose of the endowment is to recruit and/or retain faculty of stellar quality.  The funds produced by the endowment will be used to provide salary supplement to a new or existing line and also may be used to provide research and/or program support for the Chair holder.  The University is responsible for the selection of chair holders.

 

Listed below are the academic disciplines (by College) in which the University has the highest priority need for Endowed Faculty Chairs:

 

College of Arts and Letters

•  James Madison Chair…a joint appointment in History and Political Science

•  Madison Chair in American Studies…a joint appointment between English, History, and Political Science

•  Visiting Professor of Communication…supports a prominent figure from the mass media industry

 

College of Business

•  Chair of Accounting

•  Chair of Computer Information Systems

•  Chair of Economics

•  Chair of Management

•  Chair of Marketing

 

College of Education

•  Chair of Educational Administration/Leadership…to support the establishment of a doctoral program

•  Chair of Science/Math Education…to develop JMU as a center for math/science education and teacher prep

•  Chair of Special Education…to further establish Special Education as a center of excellence

 

•  College of Integrated Science and Technology

•  Chair of Science/Math/Technology Education…connection of science, math, and technology to teacher education

•  Chair of Clinical Psychology…would significantly enhance the Combined Doctoral Program in Clinical, Counseling and School Psychology

•  Chair of Assessment…to strengthen the linkage between Psychology and Assessment

•  Chair of Environmental Science (connections to surrounding national parks/forest and Chesapeake Bay watershed)
