Camp Information

When is the camp?

The camp will start in the early afternoon on June 17  and will end on the morning of June 30. 

What will a typical day be like?

8:00-9:00: Breakfast

9:30-11:30: Lectures

11:30-1:00: Lunch

1:00-5:00: Speech/Debate Labs

5:00-6:30: Dinner

6:30-8:00: Practice Speeches (optional for commuters)

8:00-10:00: Free Time/Fun Activity

What is dorm life like?

There will be separate floors for males and females, each monitored nightly by different members of the JMU debate team.

Bell Hall has a kitchen facility with microwave oven, vending services, carpeted study lounges, TV lounge, and laundry facilities. 

A typical room in Bell Hall has:

Two single beds with innerspring mattresses, all bunkable

Two individual desks with chairs

Two free standing wardrobes

Two chests of drawers

Telephone, TV cable hookup and internet access (wired)

This building is air-conditioned (yes!)

How much money do I need to bring?

Students need money for snacks and supplies that they do not bring with them. JSDI covers all of the student meals and entertainment expenses.

What should I pack?

  • enough clothing for two weeks

  • shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste/toothbrush/hair products/deodorant, toiletries, ect

  • flip flops, sneakers

  • umbrella! it rains all the time

  • bathing suit (if you want to go swimming, urec has a pool)

  • workout clothes if you want to go to urec

  • pens, highlighters, tape, scissors, debate tub, expandos, folders, paper, usb drive,

  • laptop,cord forinternet

  • frisbee, football,basketball, tennis rackets

  • change, laundry detergent

  • snacks, drinks, etc.

  • sheets/pillow for your bed

Will supplies be provided?

Supplies will be available for purchase, but students may elect to bring their own if they would like.

How much free time do I have, and what is there to do?

There will be free time each day where students may attend the UREC (JMU's top level university rec center) with an RA, play on the quad or hang out in the student lounge.

Will there be practice debates/speeches?

The JDI is geared towards improving debate skills through practice. Each night students will engage in practice debates and speeches. The goal is to have students practice dozens of times during the course of the institute.
