Masterpiece Music Series




Brass Band

The JMU Brass Band is one of only a few collegiate brass bands in the United States.  Formed in the fall of 2000, the band has twice been named the North American Brass Band Association Honors Section Champion.  They are also the NABBA Championship Section runner-up two years in a row.  The group is a traditional British-style band and is well known for its range of music, from movie music to the most current writings for brass bands.

Symphony Orchestra

This is the first of two performances by the Orchestra on this year's Masterpiece Season. The JMU Symphony Orchestra has become one of the premier ensembles in the Shenandoah Valley, and they perform a wide variety of orchestral literature, from the great masters to today's contemporary works.  Plan to be on hand for the concert by this celebrated group!

JMU Opera Theatre - Carmen

The JMU Opera presents Bizet's French opéra comique as its main-stage production for the year.  While Carmen was not a great success during Bizet's lifetime, this tale of love, rejection, mutiny and murder has gone on to become one of the world's most performed operas!

Honors Symphony Orchestra

A newcomer to the Masterpiece Season, the Honors Symphony features winners of the JMU School of Music Concerto Competition.  This new orchestra will perform a variety of works which will showcase their abilities.  Works may include Rimsky-Korsakoff and Mussorgsky.
