Faculty Awards At JMU, our faculty members are recognized for their work through various accolades and awards that they receive. The three highest faculty awards in our College are the Madison Scholar Award, the Distinguished Teacher Award, and the Distinguished Service Award. Many of our accomplished faculty are also recognized by the University. The Provost Award for Excellence recognizes faculty who have made extraordinary contributions to the University. The General Education Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes faculty members for their support of, and commitment to, the liberal arts and sciences curriculum of the university. The James Madison Distinguished Faculty Award recognizes professional achievement in and outside of the classroom.
Educational Leave The College of Science and Mathematics offers Educational Leaves to provide faculty members with opportunities, such as independent study, research, and postgraduate study, to expand their teaching abilities and to foster intellectual growth. The ultimate purpose of these leaves is to sustain vigor, especially in the University’s academic instructional programs, and to ensure that faculty members have the opportunity for professional development.
Faculty Summer Teaching and Research Grants The College of Science and Mathematics offers Summer Teaching Grants and Summer Research Grants to assist faculty members who wish to engage in substantial instructional development, research, and other scholarly enhancement efforts that cannot reasonably be completed as part of their normal teaching and professional responsibilities.
College Council The College Council represents the College of Science and Mathematics faculty and serves as an official body involved in governance of the College and providing advice to the Dean. Membership consists of representatives from all five departments.
JMU Faculty Handbook The Faculty Handbook was approved by the Board of Visitors on April 1, 2011 and became effective July 1, 2011.
