Dominica

Paix Bouche, Dominica

Students enrolled in ANTH 395 will be immersed in the culture of Dominica through meetings and experiences with Dominican individuals and groups, and through participation in various cultural and eco-tourism activities around the island. The purpose of this cultural immersion is to gain a body of experience that meets the anthropology learning goals of the course, while also serving the community needs of Paix Bouche.

Before departing for Dominica, students will carry out extensive background study of the island's history, culture, and languages, and will formulate their individual research projects. While in Dominica, students will explore their topics of interest through observation of and first-hand participation in everyday life in home, school, work, and community settings.

The JMU group will engage in a service-learning project in Paix Bouche that will be decided with our Dominican partners. Registration for this 3-credit anthropology course is done during spring registration through permission of the instructor.

Instructor is Amy Paugh (paughal@jmu.edu)

Trip leaders are Devyn Hunter and Emily DeMeo
