The Counseling & Student Development Center offers individual, group, and substance abuse counseling to JMU students. During your initial appointment a counselor can help you decide which service would be the most beneficial to you.

Forget about what you see in the movies; for one thing there's no couch. Individual counseling facilitates the exploration of a problem or issue in a safe and confidential environment. Counseling at the CSDC is a collaborative endeavor in which the counselor and client work together to identify goals and directions for treatment.

Group Counseling

During the Fall and Spring Semesters of each academic year, the Counseling Center offers undergraduate and graduate students a number of small group experiences on issues related to their needs. There is no session limit on group participation.

The CSDC is offering the following groups in Spring 2008:

  • General Therapy
    • Tuesdays 3:00-4:30 -or-
    • Wednesdays 3:00-4:30 -or-
    • Wednesdays 5:00-6:30 -or-
    • Thursdays 1:00-2:30
  • PRIDE - This educational/support group allows students the opportunity to explore and share issues and concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons. The group also provides an opportunity to increase self-acceptance and respect.
    • Fridays 3:30-5:00
  • Eating Disorders Support Group - This group is offered to students who are in various stages of preoccupation with food and thinness. The group will provide an opportunity to discuss issues related to eating and thinness, interpersonal relationships, developmental, and psychosocial issues.
    • Mondays 3:00-4:30 -or-
    • Tuesdays 3:00-4:30
  • Substance Abuse Work Group - For students struggling with alcohol/substance use who are trying to change their levels of drinking or drug use.
    • Tuesdays 1:00-2:15

The primary goal of the CSDC's substance abuse services is to help students make healthy choices and reduce the risk of harm caused by excessive drinking or drug use. Our services can facilitate the change process in a supportive, non-judgmental, and collaborative environment.
