Substance Abuse at JMU

The Core Study (2006), compiled through The Office of Substance Abuse Research, found that many JMU students experience adverse consequences due to their drinking/ substance abuse:

  • 50% of students did something they later regretted
  • 12.2 % reported that they had been taken advantage of sexually
  • 16.9% were in trouble with the police
  • 45.6% got into an argument or fight
  • 1.2% tried to commit suicide
  • 5.7% seriously thought about suicide
  • 15.3% thought they might have a drinking/drug problem

In addition, many students suffer from alcohol-related problems such as poor class attendance, missed assignments, accidents, sexual assault, and violence.
