The Office of Economic
Services maintains a permanent data base on national, state and
local economics. The information is available at no charge to JMU
faculty, staff and students and the local and regional business
communities. The data base contains historic as well as current
data on more than 600 different sectors of the U.S. economy. Among
the sectors for which monthly, quarterly and annual(seasonally
adjusted and unadjusted)figures are available are:
* Economic performance measurements, i.e., GNP, industrial
production by all industries
* Data on US exports, imports and exchange rates
* Inflation, consumer price indices(alternative measures)
* Detailed financial data on the nation's money supply, a wide
spectrum of interest rates and financial instructions, money and
capital market trends, stock market behavior and US treasury as
well as corporate bonds
* Labor market statistics such as employee compensations and
national and regional unemployment data by industry, gender, race,
etc.
* Federal state and local tax revenues, US budget deficits, and
non-civilian activities in the public sector
* Detailed data on energy and utilities
* Residential and commercial housing data

This office offers and
supports credit-earning international programs and the Commonwealth
of Virginia International Internship Program. The OIP hosts JMU's
International Week every year in the fall. Any student, JMU or
other, who wishes to enroll in studies abroad programs or who
wishes to engage in an international internship may use this
office.

The Office of Substance
Abuse Research is a subcontractor to the Governor's Office of
Substance Abuse Prevention under the Virginia State Incentive
Grant, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Three prevention
capacity-building training workshops have been designed under the
subcontract. Prevention Basics Levels 1, 2, and 3 are offered
across the Commonwealth to update the knowledge and skills of
prevention professionals in a variety of settings. Prevention
Basics Level 1 is offered as an online course for CEUs; CEUs and
CHES certification points are available for all three levels. The
audience served is entry level prevention program coordinators and
supervisors from multiple agencies, including community services
boards, school divisions, Offices on Youth, health and social
service agencies, and other community organizations such as Boys
and Girls Clubs, YMCAs and faith-based organizations engaged in
substance abuse prevention activities.

The Office on Children and
Youth, a partnership program, provides information and referral
services to children and youth with the goal of promoting positive
development. OCY is a central contact point for services in
Harrisonburg and Rockingham County to support, coordinate, and
examine the needs of our children and youth.

Planetarium
540-JMU-STAR
The John C. Wells
Planetarium provides unidirectional seating for an audience of 65
under a 30 foot dome. A star field of more than 4,000 stars is
displayed using a Viewlex GOTO Mark II A star projector. The lens
projection system used in this instrument produces an unusually
sharp and realistic star field. The GOTO projector also displays
the sun, the moon, the naked-eye planets, and numerous galaxies,
nebulae, and star clusters.
Public planetarium programs of current interest are presented the
first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. There is no
admission charge. Call 540-JMU-STAR for further

Through a forty-hour
curriculum in basic health promotion and disease prevention,
Hispanic women are empowered to take greater control of their
health and assist members of their community by providing health
information and directing them to appropriate community
resources.
