ADSU 668 OP01 - Practicum in School Administration

Course Description:   The purpose of this course is to provide administrative field experience and support for Master's degree candidates in School Administration.  Candidates participate in an internship during which they apply and integrate theoretical knowledge learned in their course work with the practice of leadership and management of schools and school districts.  Candidates work under the supervision of a practicing school administrator and university professor to collaborate in the planned experience and to guide the prospective administrator through demonstration of a wide range of knowledge and skills at the building and district level.   The candidate should experience the full range of duties, problems and issues encountered by an administrator so he or she may synthesize and apply the knowledge and practice and developed skills in a real work setting. Developmental and evaluative feedback will be provided the intern throughout the practical problems of leadership and management.  Candidate will be required to complete a major administrative project.  This course fulfills the Commonwealth of Virginia's filed experience endorsement requirement and may take either before or after the Master's degree has been awarded.

Course Description:    This course is designed to assist participants in examining the nature of collaboration related to the practices among Career Technical Education and academic educators. It is a classroom-based, hands-on approach to collaborative co-planning which provides professional educators an opportunity to collaboratively develop and apply advanced professional skills in lesson planning for the purpose of supporting the Virginia Standards of Learning in Career Technical Education curriculum.  Participants will explore ways to strengthen CTE task and competency activities and implement instruction that supports content area standards and literacy skills.

Course Description:   This course will cover the following topics:  Basic photo and video composition; how to plan for a photo and video shoot to minimize editing problems; basic editing of photos and video clips; creating and saving media content; using media content in a PowerPoint or other presentation suitable for use in a DCE classroom; searching for and finding media content on the web; downloading media content and using it in a pres4entation; copyright issues regarding Internet content; using Microsoft Movie Maker to create a video clip that includes a title, transitions and credits; using video clips in a presentation.

Course Description:   Create a lesson for an online field trip that incorporates current technology.  Visit websites that enable students to collect and analyze data, using online equipment.  Focus on an ecosystem that's appropriate for your middle school students.  Learn high-tech strategies that allow them to record and analyze information, investigate the results, and share their finding.  As a final task, design a unit plan for an ecosystem field trip that incorporates current technologies for gathering, analyzing, and sharing data. EDUC 501 OP01 - 2007 Content Teaching Academy in English as a Second Language

Course Description:   The ESL Academy is a 5-day course on English as a Second Language education designed to PK-12 content area teachers, ESL teachers, and school administrators. The academy will focus on issues of differentiation of instruction in the content areas. The several sessions in the academy will provide participants with a model of lesson planning and curriculum design that will allow English Language Learners (ELLs) with increased access to content standards PK-12.  The academy will also draw heavily on instructional differentiation in response to the learners' different readiness levels, abilities and learning styles. Students will participate in an on-campus academy experience June 25-29, 2007. Participation in web-based follow-up sessions is required.  All lessons must be posted by July 20, 2006 and all feedback must be posted by August 3, 2007.

Course Description:   This course is designed to accomplish two major goals for the teachers, supervisors, and administrators who will participate:  increase knowledge of the content defined by the Virginia Standards of Learning and improved instructional delivery of that content.  The course will e delivered in a conference format.  Participants in the Secondary English/Language Arts Academy will focus on exploring ways to promote the learning and appreciation of literature and writing for a wide range of learners. Both the grades 6-8 and grades 9-12 sessions will feature strategies for teaching narrative and informational literature as well as narrative and expository writing. Students will participate in an on-campus academy experience June 25-29, 2007. Content objectives are: 1) to provide opportunities for teachers to develop the knowledge and skills of history geography, and civics that will help their students place the people, ideas and events that have shaped our state and nation in perspective; 2) to enhance teacher knowledge of economic principles and to develop strategies that will help students learn to make wise economic decisions and become intelligent consumers; 3) to acquaint teachers with the reading skills necessary to teach children to be independent, strategic readers with emphasis placed on comprehension, vocabulary, and writing; 4) to engage teachers in vocabulary development activities that will enhance understanding of important concepts for students at the elementary level. Course Description:  Participants who are not NETS*T-certified will demonstrate and document progress toward mastery of all National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T) beginning during the 2007 Academy and continuing through the fall 2007 semester with self-initiated classroom- and school-based activities.  Participants who are NETS*T-certified will develop and implement a project addressing 21st Century Skills in their classrooms beginning during the 2007 Academy and continuing through the fall 2007 semester.  The course is suitable for both regular classroom teachers and Virginia Instructional Technology Resource Teachers (ITRTs). EDUC 501 OP08 - 2007 Content Teaching Academy in Earth Science

Course Description:  For the 2007 session, the 6-12 Science Content Academy will tailor efforts to meet the broad range of experience and background levels among participants. We are organizing the Science Academy into two Earth Science strands:  1) Introduction to the Earth Sciences:   The basic concepts of Earth Science, as expressed in the SOLs, include Geology, Oceanography, Meteorology, and Space Science/Astronomy.  Participants in this strand will be engaged in hands-on activities related to and discussions of the basic concepts, definitions, and interconnections of each of these four domains.  Expected products of participants will include plans for selecting and evaluating instructional materials inquiry instruction in Earth science and practices appropriate to their student audience; 2) Inquiry in the Earth Sciences:  Contemporary issues, recent advances and discoveries are part of the learning experiences in this strand.  Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their experiences by engaging in investigations of Earth science problems, application of field and laboratory techniques in the Earth sciences, and articulating inquiry-oriented instruction for Earth sciences classes.  Problems relevant to the interactions of Geology, Oceanography, Meteorology, and Space sciences will be presented.  Participants will exit the Academy with a capacity to design and evaluate inquiry instruction from an Earth Systems approach. Applicants will participate in an on-campus academy experience June 25-29, 2007. GEOL 501 OP01 - VESC Meteorology for Teachers

Course Description:   Concepts include the Earth's heat budget and global wind patters, weather vs. climate, radiation, convection, cloud formation, the hydrologic cycle, vertical structure of the atmosphere, orographic effects on weather, severe weather, the influence of life (microbial, human) and geologic processes on atmospheric composition and temperature through geologic times, comparison of the atmospheres of Earth, Mars, and Venus.  The majority of this course will be through Internet, with participants meeting for several face-to-face sessions during the course.  Participants will utilize real-time and near real-time data, engage in hands-on activities and interact with weather professionals.  The course will feature application of experimental design to meteorology and an examination of current understandings of climate change and how these understandings reveal the nature of the scientific enterprise and scientific knowledge.  Concepts are related to Virginia's SOL for Earth Science (ES 1, 3, 9, 11, 12, 13).

GEOL 501 OP02 - VESC Oceanography for Teachers

Course Description:   See how the disciplines of geology, chemistry, physics and biology are integrated in the study of the oceans.  Through a blend of lecture, lab and field experiences learn about the tectonic evolution of the ocean basins, physiography of the sea floor, heat capacity of the oceans and influence on maritime climates, waves, tides, influence of winds on surface currents, upwelling, influence of temperature and salinity and density and deep water circulation, coastal geology, marine ecosystems, controls on marine sedimentation, microfossils and ancient oceans, and marine resources.  Hands-on and computer-simulated labs and an intense 3-day sea and shore-based experience at the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences Field Station on the Eastern Shore will provide you with effective strategies, self-collected samples and datasets, and the scientific foundation to teach oceanography concepts even in landlocked classrooms.

Course Description:   An instructional program on the history and principles of American constitutional democracy for elementary, middle and high school students.  The program is based on curricular materials developed by the Center of Civic Education and acclaimed by leading educators.  Simulated congressional hearings, excellent for performance assessment, are built into the curriculum.  At the high school level, classes may choose to enter a competition structured as a simulated hearing where their knowledge of the Constitution is tested.

HIST 501 OP02 - The Middle East: Part I

Course Description:   To prepare course participants to more effectively teach students about the history, politics, and cultural and physical geography of the region known as the Middle East and to aid them in developing techniques and materials for teaching students about this important area.  Much emphasis will be placed on providing information and materials that relate to Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning (SOLs) in World Geography, World History and Geography to 1500 A.D., World History and Geography from 1500 A.D. to the Present, and Virginia and U.S. History.    The course will explore the topography and varied linguistic and ethnic populations of the region.  Special attention will be paid to the development, teachings, practices and relationships between the three great monotheistic religions that emerged here.  Reading, films, and lectures will cover in some detail the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the cartographic and political legacy of decisions made after WWI at the 1919 Versailles Conference.  The course will conclude with an examination of the major events in this region from WWI to the creation of the state of Israel.
