Course Description:      Discrete Mathematics is a branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can assume only distinct, separated values.  This course offers a nice counterpoint to the study of continuous mathematics that students pursue in calculus.  Because the ideas of discrete mathematics inform the study of compute science, this course will emphasize the connections between them through classroom examples and lab experiences.

EDTC 520 OP01 - Principles of Instructional Technology

Course Description:    This course is designed to help content area and instructional technology resource teachers to incorporate SOL-based video and Internet resources into the K-12 curriculum.  Teachers will learn new strategies for the effective use of videotapes and videostreamed programs in a classroom setting, and develop techniques for seamless integrating of video and the Internet into their classroom lessons.  In addition, they will establish methods for applying content to the "real world' and making cross-curricular connections for their students. This course is also intended to assist teachers in developing skills as trainers of adult learners; it culminates in the modeling of a lesson and presentation of learned strategies and information to teachers who participate in a two-day Institute.

Course Description:   The goal of this course is to study fundamental life processes within the context of developing technologies, such as genetic engineering, biopharmaceutical drug development, and the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.  In addition to covering the science and technology of molecular genetics, cell biology, and infectious diseases, this course explores the economic, social, legal and ethical issues associated with these topics. Students will specifically explore infectious diseases, bioterrorism, epidemiology, immunity, genetics, cell structure and function, biochemistry, gene expression and biotechnology ethics and controversies.

ISAT 112 OP01 - Environmental Issues in Science & Technology

Course Description:  In this course, laboratory and field investigations are emphasized as student explore the abiotic environment, the biota and the complex interactions between them that characterize living systems.  Students analyze environmental problems, evaluate risks, and investigate ways to prevent and /or solve environmental problems.  Topics investigated include earth systems (atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere); human impact on earth systems; populations, communities, ecosystems and biomes; biodiversity; energy flow and materials' cycling; evolution and geologic history; human history and influences; location, quantity and extraction of natural resources; natural and anthropogenic environmental changes; environmental economics and policy, and choices for the future.

MATH 501 OP01 - Workshop in Mathematics - Numbers and Operations

Course Description:  This course will enable teachers to: 1) Understand and be able to explain the mathematics that underlies the procedures used for operating on whole numbers and rational numbers; 2) Understand and be able to explain the distinctions among whole numbers, integers, rational numbers and real numbers, and that field axioms hold or do not hold depending on the types of numbers being used; 3)  Convert easily among fractions, decimals, and percents; 4) Demonstrate facility in using number and operation properties, including mental computation and computational estimation; 5) Understand and be able to explain fundamental ideas of number theory as they apply to middle school mathematics; 6) Make sense of large and small numbers and use scientific notation; and  7) Apply proportions appropriately and provide explanations.

Participants will be able to 1) define "middle school," 2) evaluate the elements of middle level education, 3) discuss differing research-based perspectives on those elements, and 4) develop and /or refine personal positions on those elements.

 SPED 200 OP03 - Nature and Issues of Disabilities

Course Description:  The nature, needs and problems of exceptional children and how these relate to educational provisions are studied.  The status of individuals with disabilities in society will be emphasized.  Federal and state laws ensuring the rights of individuals with disabilities will be stressed.  The course has been designed around a lecture format.  Audiovisual materials will be used extensively including videos and illustrative overheads developed for each instructional topic.  The topical videotapes will be used to increase both student awareness regarding specific issues and student understanding of course content.  Students should feel free to ask questions and engage in discussions related to any of the scheduled topics.

Course Description:  This course is designed to provide an overview of the current issues involved in working with children who have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder.  Areas addressed will include learning characteristics, current research and factors involved with causation, assessment and diagnosis.  We will discuss only briefly positive behavioral supports; social skills development; sensory processing, motor planning and sensory integration; and communication and language development as these will be covered in much greater depth in other courses.  A range of instructional methodologies and techniques will be emphasized throughout the course. (This is the first required course for the Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies)

Course Description:   The course content includes an understanding of both the theoretical and practical implementation of the appropriate instructional approaches for gifted learners.  Adaptations and modification to general methods and strategies will be included.  Emphasis will be placed on the specific instructional strategies that promote appropriate academic rigor and learner independence.
