Information Regarding Licensure

Most teachers attend an Academy as a means for accumulating additional Licensure Renewal Points. See the Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual for a complete guide to the options for keeping your teaching license up to date. Additional information about the credit options can be found at the following link: Credit Options.

Highly Qualified Status: Recently, many teachers have attended an Academy as an option for veteran teachers who are looking to attain "highly qualified" status for a particular content area under NCLB. Academy participation may be used to meet the "highly qualified" requirement for only one academic discipline each year of attendance.Participants interested in obtaining highly qualified status are encouraged to contact the appropriate personnel in their division and consult the latest information at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/suptsmemos/2007/inf043.html. Also see Academy notes below.

Elementary Academies (Grades K-5)

K-5 Math/Science:  This academy may be used by K-5 general education teachers who work with students in K-5 classrooms to attain highly qualified status in one academic discipline each year of attendance. Registrants should choose a strand (Mathematics OR Science) according to the discipline in which they desire to be "highly qualified".

ASOL Special Education: Special Education teachers attending the ASOL Special Education Academy will obtain a certificate of completion that can be used for recertification points. This strand of the Content Teaching Academy will not fulfill requirements for Highly Qualified. Teachers will get training in English and Mathematics but will still have to get additional training from their local school division in the area of Science and History to fulfill High Qualified requirements.

Secondary Academies (Grades 6-12)

Citizenship Education, English, Mathematics, Physics/Physical Science, Geography and Environment, Reading: These academies may be used by general education and special education teachers seeking highly qualified status.  Highly qualified status may be earned in only one academic discipline each year of attendance.  Participants should enroll in the academy of their choice and should specify (where requested) the strand that most closely matches their teaching assignment.

Required Follow-up Assignments

HOUSSE standards require follow-up assignments to complete an institute that confers "highly qualified" status. Follow-up assignment information is available at each Academy web page.
