STRATEGIC INSTRUCTION MODEL READING ACADEMY

 

6-12 READING / STRATEGIC INSTRUCTION MODEL READING ACADEMY The strategic Instruction Model (SIM) Reading Academy is for professionals who are responsible for the supervision and/or instruction of students that are struggling readers in middle and high school. The Word Identification, Visual Imagery, Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing, and the Self Questioning strategies from the Learning Strategies curriculum will be offered to participants.  The Framing Routine and the Vocabulary Lincing Routine from the Content Enhancement Routines curriculum will also be offered in this academy. A commitment to coaching and administrative participation during the fall semester is required for all educators who attend this academy.

 

SIM in the Goal of the Content Teaching Academies In addition, participants of the 6-12 academies will receive professional development in the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM), a research-validated instructional model, developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. The Survey Routine and the Recall Enhancement Routine will be offered in these academies.

 

This academy is limited to 35 participants

Diane Gillam

Academy Chair

 

Diane C. Gillam is a specialist in the Office of Special Education Instructional Services at the Virginia Department of Education. In her current position, she offers leadership in the areas of learning disabilities and attention deficit. In addition to the above responsibilities, she coordinates the professional development for the commonwealth for the Strategic Instruction Model from the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.

Ms.Gillam earned a M.Ed. in special education from James Madison University and is also a certified professional developer in the Strategic Instruction Model. Prior to her current position, she taught for 16 years, worked as a facilitator in special education, and was an educational consultant in a university setting.
