K-12 GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT

THE K-12 GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT ACADEMY will focus on SOL-based themes in social studies and the sciences related to local governance and environmental health.  The hands-on, problem-solving approach of this academy will provide teachers with content background specifically related to local resource management.  Participants will explore the variety of issues related to watershed health in Virginia, including historical land use in the state; legislation governing resource management; food production; transportation; and native animal and plant species.  Economics, geography, and history will guide the discussion.  Issues of biology, chemistry, and physical science will be significant topics as they relate to the natural environment.  Regional experts will engage participants in field-based inquiry.  Field experiences will introduce inquiry projects in which teachers can engage social studies and/or science students.  This strand is designed for teachers who intend to implement a hands-on discussion of contemporary topics.

This academy is limited to 35 participants
