THE K-12
GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT ACADEMY will focus on SOL-based themes in social studies and the
sciences related to local governance and environmental
health. The hands-on, problem-solving approach of this
academy will provide teachers with content background specifically
related to local resource management. Participants will
explore the variety of issues related to watershed health in
Virginia, including historical land use in the state; legislation
governing resource management; food production; transportation; and
native animal and plant species. Economics, geography, and
history will guide the discussion. Issues of biology,
chemistry, and physical science will be significant topics as they
relate to the natural environment. Regional experts will
engage participants in field-based inquiry. Field experiences
will introduce inquiry projects in which teachers can engage social
studies and/or science students. This strand is designed for
teachers who intend to implement a hands-on discussion of
contemporary topics.
