PreK-12 ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

 

 

PreK-12 ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS ACADEMY is a 5-day course on English Language Learners education tailored to PK-12 content area teachers, ESL teachers, and school administrators.  The 2008 academy will focus on Literacy Development and Assessment of English Language Learners in PK-12 content area classrooms.  This year's ELL Academy will include a collaborative component where participants in the ELL Academy will work collaboratively with participants from other Academies in specific assignments. 

 

In addition to its collaborative component, the ELL Academy will bring guest speakers with expertise in literacy development, literacy assessment, and on the Virginia Grade Level Alternative (VGLA) which is currently used to gauge second language learners' performance and progress in content classrooms. 

 

This academy is limited to35 participants

Academy Chair

 

Dr. Solange A. Lopes-Murphy is an Associate Professor of Education and the Teaching English as a Second Language Program (TESL) Coordinator in the Department of Exceptional Education at James Madison University.  She does teacher training in the areas of teaching methodology, assessment, literacy development, and second language acquisition.
