6-12 CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION

6-12 CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION ACADEMY

(History & Social Studies teachers)

Making future active, global citizens is the purpose for all teachers, but social studies teachers especially feel the call to citizenship education. Through this, we are challenged to open our students' eyes to a broader global view, teach skills of democratic actions, promote the civic attitudes, values, and behaviors which secure the future of our democracy. In this Academy, we will actively investigate diverse understandings of what it means to make global and national citizens. Speakers will include content specialists who will challenge and develop our understandings of the heart of social studies education. Presenters will also include classroom experts who have much to share concerning their experience with teaching the content, skills and attitudes of global citizenship in a variety of courses, 6 12. The diverse slate of speakers will each lend their own expertise to our learning community where we are discovering what it means to create future citizens of our students. Time will also be given to share with each other our own experiences and insights, process what we are learning, and create new tools to take back into our classrooms.

This academy is limited to 70 participants
