Microsoft Active Directory / Windows File Servers
Microsoft Active Directory for Windows Servers is one of the directory services in use at JMU.
Active Directory is made up of one or more domains (or security boundaries of a Windows network).
JMU has multiple domains spanning more than one physical location. Every domain has its own security
policies and security relationships with other domains.
File/server applications run in an Active Directory Domain. In the JMU Active Directory Domain or
JMUAD, we have Frontpage webserver application on orgs.jmu.edu, people.jmu.edu and web.jmu.edu and
various other centrally supported departmental specific Windows file/server applications.
To access these applications:
- You must have an active e-ID and password.
- Request
access to a Frontpage webservers for web.jmu.edu and people.jmu.edu
(Departmental specific applications are handled within your department.

- Within 2 business days you will be contacted concerning your request.
- The following login instructions will be sent to you to access your Windows file/server application:
Notice: Supported login id formats vary between versions of Microsoft Windows:
- Windows XP Professional "your e-ID@jmu.edu" or "JMUAD\your e-ID" and your JMUAD Domain password.
- Windows 2000 Professional and older versions "JMUAD\your e-ID" and your JMUAD Domain password.
Also depending on the version of Windows or the application you are using you may even see two different styles of login boxes.
- Style #1 has only "User name" and "Password" fields, based on your version of Windows use the above indicated login id format.
- Style
#2 has a "User name", "Password" and Domain fields. This style login
box permits inputting your "e-ID" in the "User Name" field and the
"JMUAD" Domain name in the "Domain" field.
