Systems and Operations

Back-ups

Systems and Operations are currently taking advantage of two backup solutions. All UNIX based (HP-UX, Linux and Solaris) servers and Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 servers are backed up with Legato NetWorker. All Novell NetWare servers are backed up with Computer Associates ARCserve. See below for additional specific information:

UNIX based servers and Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 server:
These servers are backed up daily. If any restores are needed please call the HelpDesk immediately. It is possible that if you delete a file the same day as the backup runs, the file may not be on the tape. If you need a file restored, use the File Restoration Request form.

Novell NetWare servers:
Full backups of these file servers are made once a month, usually on the first weekend of the month. This means that every file on these servers are backed up to DAT tape every 30 days.

Incremental backups of these file servers are also made every week night (excluding weekend nights). An incremental differs because this backs up files that have changed or are new since the last incremental backup. All files should be closed at the end of the day, as open files are locked and cannot be backed up.

So, if someone needs files restored to a network drive you can almost guarantee recovery. If the file was created new and deleted or corrupted during the workday before the backup was done, the file cannot be restored from backup (it could however be "Salvaged", see below for instructions).

Place a call to the HelpDesk at 568-3555 and by providing the following information will assist in a speedy restore:
  1. Complete name of the file(s) needing to be restored
  2. Complete server\folder structure name where the file(s) was/were stored
  3. The date of the file(s) that need to be restored

Salvaging a File:
If the file was deleted or changed and the user's computer has Novell's Client installed, they can right-click on the networked folder where the file existed, then choose the Properties option from the right-click menu. With Novell's Client, the user will see a "Salvage Files.." option. This feature is very similar to the Recycle Bin option on the local computer desktop. When the user chooses the Salvage File option a screen will appear containing a list of files that have been deleted, which can be salvaged. If an entire folder of files were deleted, the folder will need to be restored from backup.
