SSL VPN Junos Pulse


Junos Pulse places your computer on the JMU network with a JMU IP address. While connected, all network traffic is routed through JMU’s network. 

Suggested uses: access to library resources and applications/services that cannot be supported by a web browser session or file access method. All network traffic is sent through this service, so this access method should be used only as needed.

How to Sign In and Use Junos Pulse:

For most people, signing into the SSL VPN will only require your e-ID and password and the default Green Realm.  For specialized user populations, a two-factor token issued by IT Security Engineering and the Black realm will be required to sign in.

  1. Open a browser and go to sslvpn.jmu.edu
  2. Click "Yes" if the website provides a Security warning about trusting the site.
  3. Enter your JMU e-ID and password
  4. In the Realm drop down box, either leave the realm Green (the default for the General User population that does not require a token) or select Black (specialized user population requiring a two-factor token from IT Security Engineering)
  5. Click the "Sign In" button
  6. If you receive an Internet Security box from Juniper Networks, click "Allow"
  7. Click the “Start” button to the right of Junos Pulse to start a session. Note: If this is the first time you have clicked Start on this computer, you will need to first perform the installation steps in the How to Install Junos Pulse section below for either Windows or Mac.

  9. To verify that you are connected via Junos Pulse:
    • On Windows: Click on the up arrow in the System Tray next to your date and time and then hover over the Junos Pulse symbol Junos Pulse icon
      You will see the indicator saying "Pulse:  Connected".

    • On Mac: Confirm the presence of the Junos Pulse symbol Junos Pulse symbol on your top menu bar. 
  10. You should now be able to access the needed resources (example: Library resources) as if you were on campus.

  11. When you are done using Junos Pulse, follow the instructions to log out for Windows or Mac.




How to Install Junos Pulse (Windows):
  1. Click the “Start” button to the right of Junos Pulse to start a session

  3. If prompted by the Juniper Setup Applet, click "Run" and/or "Allow"

  4. Select "Yes" and enter your administrator credentials if prompted

  6. You can verify that you are connected via Junos Pulse by clicking on the up arrow in the System Tray next to your date and time and then hovering over the Junos Pulse symbol Junos Pulse icon
    You will see the indicator saying "Pulse:  Connected".

  7. When you are finished using the Junos Pulse SSL VPN Service, you can end the session by:
    • Clicking on the up arrow in the System Tray next to your time and date.
    • Clicking on the Junos Pulse symbol Junos Pulse icon and clicking "Disconnect".

    • Closing all web browser windows that you opened using the SSL VPN Service. It is also recommended that you exit the Web browser application itself.

These next two steps are optional, but if you do not wish to have Junos Pulse start every time you start windows, you will need to disable the Junos Pulse autostart:

  1. Go to Start, type msconfig in the search bar and hit Enter

  2. Click the Startup tab, click to remove the check mark beside of Junos Pulse, click Apply, and click OK.

How to Install Junos Pulse (Mac OS)

  1. Click the “Start” button to the right of Junos Pulse to start a session

  2. Click "Trust" if prompted to use the Java plug-in.  Click "Allow and Remember" and then "Run" and then "Allow" when prompted to run the Java Applet.


  3. If at any point during installation you see a pop-up error message that states "JunosPulse.mpkg (or JuniperSetupClientInstaller.mpkg) can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer", then click OK. Click on System Preferences > Security and Privacy. Click on the lock to make changes if necessary. Make sure that under Allow apps downloaded from, Anywhere is selected. Return to Step 1 and proceed with the installation. Be sure to change your settings back after installation.


  4. If prompted to download, install, etc. the Junos Pulse software, click "Yes".  Junos Pulse will download and you will be prompted by the JuniperSetupClient for your local administrator name and password.  Enter those and click "OK".Junos Pulse


  5. The Junos Pulse window will pop up to indicate your connection status.Junos Pulse


  6. You can also verify that you are connected via Junos Pulse by confirming the presence of the Junos Pulse symbol Junos Pulse symbol on your top menu bar. 


  7. If you click the symbol you can then navigate to "Disconnect" to end your session.Junos Pulse disconnect
