SSL VPN Junos Pulse

Using Junos Pulse places your computer on the JMU network with a JMU IP address. This is necessary to access certain JMU resources from off-campus. While connected, all network traffic ­to and from your computer is routed through JMU’s network.

Suggested uses: access to library resources and applications/services that cannot be supported by a web browser session or the file access method.

Available to: students, faculty, staff and affiliates

The following methods install the Junos Pulse client to your computer, allowing it to be launched subsequently without logging in to https://sslvpn.jmu.edu through a web browser. For personally-owned computers and computer that are not managed by JMU, the client must be downloaded and manually installed. For JMU-owned and managed computers, automated installation is available. Windows and Mac instructions are provided for each of these options.

Select an installation option:

Manual Installationfor personally-owned or non-managed JMU computers.

Automated Installation – for computers that are JMU-owned and managed

Manual Installation for personally-owned or non-managed JMU computers. You will need to know your administrator credentials. If you are installing on your personal computer, these may be the username and password for your main computer account. If you are using a JMU owned machine, these are your “x” account (e-IDx) credentials.

Windows – manual install

Navigate to http://www.jmu.edu/computing/download, click on the operating system that corresponds to your computer and then click on the Junos Pulse Installer link.

Choose “Run” when prompted:

(Some browsers will only allow you to download. After downloading, navigate to where the program was saved and double-click to launch.)

Click Next

Select Typical

Click Next

Click Install

Authenticate with your administrator credentials if prompted. Click Finish to close installer and launch the Junos Pulse client.

If the client does not launch automatically, you can manually launch it by double-clicking this icon in the System Tray area (bottom right of screen)

When the client launches for the first time, click the “+” sign to add a new connection.

Enter JMU in the “Name” field and https://sslvpn.jmu.edu in the “Server URL” field. Click Connect

Select your Realm. Green is the default for most JMU users. The Black realm is for specialized connections that require a two-factor token from IT Security Engineering. Click Connect

Enter your e-ID and e-ID password in the appropriate fields. Click Connect

After successfully connecting, you should see a window that shows you are Connected and gives you the Disconnect button option. Clicking Disconnect will end your SSL VPN session.

This icon should appear illuminated in the System Tray if connected.

This is the same icon (except not illuminated) when disconnected. Right-clicking on this icon will allow you to connect to or disconnect from the SSL VPN. Optionally, to reconnect, you can click Start, All Programs, Juniper Networks, Junos Pulse, and then Junos Pulse.

Mac – manual install

The following screenshots were taken on Mavericks 10.9.3, but the steps will be similar for any Mac running 10.7 or newer. Navigate to http://www.jmu.edu/computing/download, click on the operating system that corresponds to your computer and then click on the Junos Pulse Installer link.

After downloading JunosPulse.dmg, double-click the file to open it.

Double-click JunosPulse.mpkg to launch the installation.

Note: If you get a pop-up message that states: "JunosPulse.mpkg (or JuniperSetupClientInstaller.mpkg) can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer", click OK. Then, open System Preferences and click Security & Privacy. Click on the lock to make changes if necessary (this will require your administrator credentials). Make sure that Allow apps downloaded from: is set to Anywhere. Be sure to change this setting back after installation. Relaunch JunosPulse.mpkg


Follow the installer prompts and click Install

Type your administrator credentials in the box that appears.


When the installation completes, click Close

There will now be a Junos Pulse icon in your menu bar near the time. Click on the icon and then choose Open Junos Pulse.

Click the “+” symbol to create a new connection.

Enter JMU in the “Name” field and https://sslvpn.jmu.edu in the “Server URL” field. Click Connect

Select your Realm. “Green” is the default for most JMU users. The “Black” realm is for specialized connections that require a two-factor token from IT Security Engineering.

Click Connect

Enter your e-ID and e-ID password in the appropriate fields.

Click Connect

Upon a successful connection, you will see this message. Click Close

In the Junos Pulse window, you should now see your connection with a green check mark. You can close this window and the connection will remain.

In the menu bar, the Junos Pulse icon will now have a green check mark over it. Clicking this icon will allow you to Disconnect or Suspend connection.

To start Junos Pulse sessions in the future, you can click the Junos Pulse icon in your top menu bar and click Connect. Alternatively, you can click Go in your top menu bar and then click Applications. Then, click Junos Pulse.

Automated Installation – for computers that are JMU-owned and managed

If your computer is JMU-owned and managed, you may install the Junos Pulse Client from Software Center on a Windows computer or from the JMU Self Service app on a Mac. These installation packages are preconfigured and do not require administrator credentials to install. Windows – automated install

Open Software Center and verify the Available Software tab is selected and the Show optional software box is checked, so all software available to install is visible. Choose the Junos Pulse Client to install by clicking to add a check mark beside of it and then clicking INSTALL SELECTED in the lower right corner of the window.

The Installation Status tab will then show that the Junos Pulse Client is installing.

Once the installation completes, Junos Pulse can be launched by clicking Start and then Junos Pulse (or Start, All Programs, Juniper Networks, Junos Pulse, and Junos Pulse)

To establish a connection to JMU, click Connect

Enter your e-ID and e-ID password in the appropriate fields. Click Connect


After successfully connecting, you should see a window that shows you are Connected and gives you the Disconnect button option. Clicking Disconnect will end your SSL VPN session.

Open the JMU Self Service app

Click to Install the Junos Pulse Client

After the Junos Pulse Client finishes installing, go back to Applications and click on Junos Pulse to launch the app and then click Connect

Select your Realm. Green is the default for most JMU users. The Black realm is for specialized connections that require a two-factor token from IT Security Engineering. Click Connect


Type your e-ID and Password.

Upon a successful connection, you will see this message. Click Close.

In the Junos Pulse window, you should now see your connection with a green check mark. You can close this window and the connection will remain.
