Network Printing Project

Information Technology is replacing the network printing functions that were previously provided by Novell iPrint. Users will be given instructions and a time period to convert from the old system to the new.  After all departments have converted, all Novell iPrint printers will be removed.

Why is the change being made?

IT is transitioning away from Novell’s solution to a solution from Microsoft that is more integrated with the Windows operating system. The current print services hardware and software components are being upgraded.

Who will be affected?

Faculty, staff, affiliates, graduate assistants and student employees who currently use Novell iPrint in a Windows computer environment are affected. Those printing directly to an IP address, such as Mac users, will not be affected.

When will this take place?

Initial pilot deployments began in fall 2010 with campus-wide deployment January 2011 through March 2011.  Information Technology will contact your technology coordinator or representative from your department to provide installation instructions and the removal date for your iPrint printers.

New Features

  • The ability to install network printers without logging in as an Administrator on your computer.

  • Standardized printer nomenclature
    • JMU-Owned printers with ESNs are named ESN-MakeModel (e.g. 09-1234-HP3505)
    • Leased printers (printers with no ESN, such as Konica-Minolta BizHubs) are named Dept-Lease#-MakeModel (e.g. CS-Lease2-Kmbizhub223)
  • Printers are installed with environmentally-friendly options enabled. For instance, if duplexing is available, it is turned on.  Color printers are set by default to print in black and white.
