There have been problems with the Latitude D630 and D830 laptops with the discrete video upgrade. The display becomes distorted and many times will also display a split image on the screen.
The issue is a weak die/packaging material set, which may fail with GPU temperature fluctuations. This is not limited to Dell laptops.
From what we have seen, this is more common in the systems that were purchased in the summer of 2007. Dell is aware of the issue and has updated the system BIOS to help prevent the problem from happening.
Dell will offer a 12-month limited warranty enhancement specific to this issue. For all customers worldwide, they plan to add 12 months of coverage for this issue to the existing limited warranty up to 60 months from the date of purchase.
