Statement Regarding Netbook Computers

(Updated August 10, 2009)

Netbooks are one of the latest trends in technology. A netbook is a less expensive (typically $300-$500), small, lightweight, lower-performance, reduced-featured laptop best suited for web browsing, web applications and software that does not require significant processing power. They are not intended to be a primary computer, but rather a complement to a desktop or full-featured laptop.

JMU IT has completed initial testing of the Dell Latitude 2100 netbook. The following operating systems, software, and functionality have passed testing:

Operating Systems
Windows Vista Enterprise
Windows XP SP3

Software
Microsoft Office 2007
Cisco VPN client
Symantec Antivirus
Internet Explorer
Adobe Reader

Other functionality
Join Active Directory domain; utilize SMS
Novell Client
Connect to JMU-Official-Wireless network
iPrint (not available in Vista)

JMU Information Technology recommends that departments desiring netbook computers purchase the Dell 2100. IT will provide setup and warranty repair services for these systems. A recommended bundle is available on Dell’s JMU Premier Page: (http://www.jmu.edu/procurement/computers/how_to_order.shtml).

If the options do not meet your needs, please contact Becky Helmick, Desktop Services Manager, at 568-8083 for configuration assistance.
