Computing Labs

The general computing labs at JMU are used heavily. In order to insure that you have a good experience in the lab, please review the following information prior to requesting a reservation. If you have a question or concern that is not addressed here, please call Bridget Moyer at 568-3672.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

I have a semester long reservation. Do I need to reserve the lab for finals week?
Semester long reservations end the last day of classes. If you will need the lab for a final exam, you will need to make a separate reservation.

Why don't you accept single reservations during the last two weeks of classes?
If you have a semester long reservation, you may use the lab through the end of classes. But no single reservations are taken during the last two weeks of classes. This allows students more access to the labs in the two weeks before final exam week. You may however make a single reservation during finals week.

I completed a Software Installation Request Form. What happens now?
We will make every effort to process your software installation requests prior to your reservation. Please test the software before your class.

Who may reserve a lab?
Faculty may reserve a general computer lab for class instruction.

Do I have to make a reservation in advance?
Single reservations must be made 48 hours in advance.  For semester-long reservations to receive priority, requests must be submitted prior to two weeks after the Final Proof Date for turning in classes to the Office of the Registrar.

How can I view existing reservations?
From our labs locations page, browse to the lab you wish to view and click the reservations link.

Do I have to be there during the reservation period?
An instructor must be present throughout the reserved time period.

What happens if I am late for my reservation?
If the instructor and students do not show up within 15 minutes of the starting time, the reservation will be cancelled.

I need to cancel my reservation, who do I contact?
If you find that you do not need to use the lab, please call 568-3672 to notify the lab manager as soon as possible.

My class only has 10 students and students who are not in my class want to work in the lab.
You are not required to allow students into the lab who are not in your class.  You may choose to do so.

I have a semester long reservation, does that mean I can use the lab for my final?
If you are planning to have a final exam in one of the labs you must make a separate single reservation. The semester long reservation does not include finals week.

Can I make a single reservation during the last two weeks of classes?
Reservations are not made the last two weeks of classes.

How do I make a semester long reservation?
Requests for semester long reservations should be made through your department's lab coordinator. If you are not sure if you have a department coordinator, contact Bridget Moyer at 568-3672.

How do I make a single reservation?
All single reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis and can be made by submitting an on-line form at ../forms/reserve.shtml

Where can I see the lab hours?

Is there a projector in the lab?
Overhead projectors are available in all labs that are available for reservation. With the exception of the Showker and Harrison labs, remotes are located in lockboxes in the labs. In Showker, the remote may be checked out from the lab assistants and, in Harrison, remote controls are located on the instructor consoles.

I ask that my students work on their projects outside of class time. Can I reserve the lab for students only?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept lab reservations unless you plan to be there. The demand for lab use is too high for us to be able to provide a separate reservation for your students. Of course, the students are welcome to use the lab any time it is open and not already scheduled.

We will be working through lunch.  May I bring food and drink into the lab?
Food and drink ARE NOT ALLOWED in the labs and will be immediately removed from the lab without warning.  This is to protect the facility and equipment from damaging accidents.
