Layering Text and Objects

In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, you can arrange or stack objects in any number of individual layers. You can use commands available from the Order submenu of the Draw menu on the Drawing toolbar to select the layers on which text and drawing objects (such as ovals, rectangles, lines, and text boxes) appear. For example, if text is hidden behind one or more drawing objects, you can display it by selecting the object or the stack of objects and using the Send Behind Text command.

By default, when you draw an object, it is placed in the top layer of the stack.
