Creating a New Office File

When you start an Office application, you begin with a new blank file based on a standard template in that application. In Word, this new file is called Document1 in the application title bar. In Excel, this new file is known as Book 1, because Excel files are known as workbooks. In PowerPoint, a blank presentation opens called Presentation 1. In any of these applications, additional new documents can be created at any time.

The diagram below shows a new blank document in Word. Clicking the New Blank Document button on the Standard Toolbar in any of the Office applications will open a new file.

Read through the steps: If you would like to complete these steps in an actual Office file, open an Office application proceed through the steps. (Follow this link for directions on opening an Office application.)

Practice the Skill
  1. Click the New Blank Document button on the Standard toolbar.
    A new document appears in the document area.

  2. Type your name and then click on the menu bar to close the document.
    A message box opens, asking if you want to save the changes to the current document.

  3. Select No to close the message box and the document. The document closes without being saved.

Note: You can also create a new, blank document by selecting the File menu and then selecting the New command. You can then select a file type in the New dialog box.
