Webmail – Quick Fact Sheet

and defaults of JMU’s new e-mail system are identified below:

All Users:
-
Faculty/Staff
default quota is 50MB, student default quota is 10 MB.
-
Junk Mail
folder--all messages flagged as SPAM will automatically be filed
there.
-
32 MB
is the maximum message size.
-
2000
is the maximum number of recipients for any message.
-
You will
receive an e-mail message when you are approaching maximum
quota.
-
If a message
puts you over quota, the system will attempt to send it to your
account for 8 hours. If it cannot deliver it by that amount of
time, the message will not be delivered.
Webmail Users:
-
Your e-mail
account is accessible at https://webmail.jmu.edu from any
Internet Service Provider anywhere in the world.
-
You can add a
signature by clicking on Preferences in the Navigational sidebar
and adding your signature including lines, spaces, and
separators.
-
There is an
extensive online HELP section in Webmail. Click in the
sidebar to open the Help Window.
-
Use the window
arrows and navigation in Webmail--not those in the browser.
-
After 60
minutes of e-mail inactivity you will be prompted to login
again.
-
New mail is
checked every 5 minutes.
-
Your maximum
e-mail quota and your current usage are listed on the quota bar
(on the mailbox bar at the top of the screen) or on the
Options window.
-
To add an
attachment, you must click on the ADD button after
you have browsed to identify it. If you do not click on ADD,
the message will not attach. Only one attachment can be added
at a time.

Address Books -- Webmail Users:
-
In your address
book all addresses are in one book. You can create
as many groups as you choose.
-
If you choose to use categories in your address book, each entry can
only be in one category.
- If you need to import Address Books into
Webmail (from common IMAP clients) click on
IMAP client Address Book information for configuration
information.
- The maximum number of names allowed in a
Webmail address book is 1000.

Composing - Webmail Users:
-
While
composing a message, the only way to open other compose
windows, folders, etc is to right mouse click on the
navigational bar option and open in a new window. If you left
click on another item on the navigational bar when the compose
window is open, your COMPOSE MESSAGE WILL BE LOST.

When
Composing a message and adding e-mail names in the To:, Cc:,
or Bcc: lines, e-mail names must be separated by a comma
(,) not a semicolon.

To Hide a
Recipient List
– list all the recipients of your e-mail in the Bcc line and
mail the message to
youre-id@jmu.edu or
null@jmu.edu.

Defaults - Webmail Users:
-
Default
folders in the new mail system include Inbox, Draft,
Junk Mail and Trash.
-
Default
settings will move messages marked for Deletion to the
Trash folder when the Delete button is clicked in
Webmail.
-
Default
settings will include the original message as part of
the reply.
-
Default
settings will include your signature if you have it set up in
Webmail.

Options - Webmail Users:
-
If you choose
to use it, Automatic Reply must be set in Webmail.
-
With
Automatic Reply turned on, if you receive multiple
messages from the same sender, only one Automatic Reply
will be sent a week.
-
If you
Forward your e-mail in Webmail, you may opt to save a
copy of the message in your Webmail account.
-
You can
create Message Filtering in Webmail.
-
You can
identify a White List in Webmail (those e-mails that
you always want to receive regardless of what other criteria
they meet).

Checking External Mail - Webmail Users:
-
You can
configure a POP gateway in Webmail to read your e-mail
from any of your other e-mail accounts. The messages
from each account in the POP gateway will be color coded in
the inbox .

IMAP Users (employees only) :
- If you cannot send e-mail or have not
received new e-mail recently, open a web browser to see if you
need to
register your computer on the network (the cycle is every
30 days)
- Many IMAP users will also be prompted to
login again or re-certify after 60 minutes of
inactivity in e-mail.
-
If you choose
to share any of your folders (mailboxes) with anyone
else at JMU, you must share them in Webmail, but you can
only view them in an IMAP client (Outlook).
