Objectives 2005-2006

Content Management/Portal Implementation Plan
  Since the CMS/Portal tools and technologies will have been procured, an overall project plan for implementation of the content management system and portal related projects will be developed and prioritized in cooperation with university portal committee.

Plan for Oracle/Peoplesoft merger
  Determine strategy for adapting to architecture and application changes as a result of Oracle/PeopleSoft merger. Due to our broadened customer role with Oracle, we will also discuss opportunities for a more strategic alliance.

Continue to enhance network connectivity and provide better service
  Continue to enhance network connectivity and provide better service for all users by deploying switch technology, rewiring buildings and installing wireless services in designated areas.
  • install switch technology in all Bluestone buildings
  • install wireless service to eight designated buildings and the quad
  • work with Telecom to identify next rewire projects

Reduce use of sensitive data
  In order to increase the privacy of those tracked in university databases, we will analyze and work with the university's data managers to reduce the use of sensitive data and implement a strategy for reducing risk.

Research and prepare for designing a datacenter environment that will meet our long term needs
 
  • identify and design a second datacenter
  • invest in management tools to enhance system administration
  • organize our resources to meet the current and future demands
  • research and gain experience in virtualization
  • align with external partners with the same vision

Provide a secure network infrastructure for all users and services within JMU
 
  • continue to promote and enhance security awareness
  • install firewall technologies for our host & Internet services
  • deploy a two factor authentication service for our remote support staff
  • use risk assessment methodology for security sensitive data
  • implement automated desktop management software to enhance software updates
  • split our current remote/wireless service into two separate services

Support the division heads decision on use of document imaging technology
  If the division heads decide to move forward with the use of document imaging technology, work with selected department(s) to procure, implement and support the solution.

Pursue new strategic alliances with external partners - Oracle/PeopleSoft, Microsoft, Cisco Systems

Faculty/Staff Computer Assessment Testing
  Implement an assessment testing program for faculty/staff for Office 2003 components in order to access faculty and staff proficiency in the use of the software.

HelpDesk Marketing Plan
  Create and implement a marketing plan for the HelpDesk to communicate services provided and to set customer expectations. The marketing plan also addresses a recommendation from the HelpDesk Program Review.
