Problematic Software
The fact that a piece of software exists and can be installed doesn't mean that it is wise to do so. In fact it may be extremely unwise. When unnecessary software is installed on a system that is used for business or academic purposes, the unpleasant consequence can be frequent computer crashes, sluggish behavior, or worse. The JMU Computing HelpDesk has developed a list of software that, in our experience, has caused problems. We strongly recommend that the following software NOT be installed. When HelpDesk (or CampusNet staff for on-campus students) visit a computer to troubleshoot a problem, these products are typically the first to be removed. Please note that these programs may serve useful functions and no statement is being made here against the manufacturers or their products. Rather, this is simply an internal list of software programs which have been found to cause problems on computers on our network. If you have any questions regarding this list, please contact the JMU Computing HelpDesk.
