Basic e-mail configuration
for Mobile Devices

How do I configure my phone or other mobile computing device to connect to JMU e-mail?

In order to access JMU e-mail from a mobile computing device, you must have an IMAP license and a device that is capable to access the internet either through a phone service (phones) or through a wireless network on the phone or other mobile device (see Wireless for JMU wireless requirements). Currently only faculty, staff (and student employees requiring IMAP access to a departmental mailbox) have IMAP licenses. Since every mobile device is slightly different, the Computing HelpDesk can only provide the most basic configuration settings for access JMU e-mail from a mobile device. We do not guarantee that they will work with your particular mobile device or mail client, however most devices do work with these settings. If you have trouble configuring your mobile device using these settings, please contact your vendor or phone service provider.

The settings to connect to the JMU e-mail server are:
  • Username: Your eID@jmu.edu
  • Protocol: IMAP
  • Incoming mail server: imap.jmu.edu
  • Incoming server uses SSL on port 993
  • Outgoing mail server: smtp.jmu.edu
  • Outgoing server uses SSL or TLS on port 587 (25 is a less prevalent port should 587 not work)
  • Put a check by the box for "use authentication (ESMTP)" - required for Versamail setup on Treo palm phones
