  • Computer Replacement Statement

JMU Information Technology recommends that departments budget to replace computers with an Equipment Service Number (ESN) beginning with a “13” or lower. This is to ensure the computer has the ability to perform well with supported versions of operating systems and application software. Older computers may utilize unsupported versions of operating systems and application software that no longer have updates available and present a security risk to JMU’s computing environment and data. And, if out of warranty, these computers may not be deemed cost-effective to repair in the event of a hardware failure, impacting a department’s productivity. Requesting funding to replace computers does not guarantee that funding will be provided.

JMU has concentrated its purchasing and support efforts around Dell and Apple products, including discounts and on-campus hardware warranty repair. Departments should make every effort to meet their computer needs with Dell and Apple branded products. If you need assistance configuring a Dell or Apple product to meet your needs, contact Becky Helmick at 568-8083.
