Accessing Files from Windows Vista without a Novell Client using CIFS

  1. If your Vista computer is not a part of JMU's Active Directory (JMUAD) or is a personally owned computer, you will first need to configure the Network Security to allow your computer to connect to the Novell Netware servers. Instructions on how to do this can be found here.

  2. If you are not connected to the JMU Network, do so by logging in using your VPN Client to connect wirelessly or from a remote site. For instructions explaining how to do this, see JMU On-Campus Wireless Network or JMU Off-Campus Remote Access

  3. Launch Windows Explorer.

  4. On the Menu Bar of Windows Explorer, click Map network Drive.

  5. Select an unused drive letter in the Drive field.

  6. Type \\Your Server Name name of your server in the Folder field. Examples of server names are:
    • \\nwdata1.fs.jmu.edu\data
    • \\nwdata2.fs.jmu.edu\data
    • \\nwdata3.fs.jmu.edu\data

Uncheck Reconnect at logon, click "different user name," and click Finish.

  7. You will see a login dialog. Enter your e-ID and password.

  8. Click Finish.

  9. A connection dialog will appear briefly.

  10. After connecting, the drive will appear in Windows Explorer.
