Annick Dupal has been teaching at JMU since 1998 and has been in her current position (lecturer) since 2001.  She teaches/has taught SCOM basic courses; SCOM 240 Introduction to Communication Theory; SCOM 241L Communication Theory lab; SCOM 242 Presentational Speaking; SCOM 245 Signs, Symbols, and Social Interactions; SCOM 248 Introduction to Intercultural Communication; SCOM 261 Public Relations Techniques I: Writing; SCOM 280 Intro to Communication Research; and SCOM 320 Introduction to Interpersonal Communication; SCOM 367 Advanced PR Writing. She has taught screenplay writing for the School of Media Arts and Design in fall 2011 and French for the language department for a period of five years.

Annick was the director of a short-term summer study-abroad program in Canada in 2005 and was faculty in residence in Antwerp, Belgium, in the spring of 2011.  She enjoys traveling and loves to combine work and pleasure. She was also FMIR in Florence, Italy, in the spring of 2015. On campus Annick was a freshman advisor for more than a decade; has been a major advisor to SCOM students as well. She was Lambda Pi Eta's (National Communication Honors Society) advisor for seven years and was a faculty advisor to Phi Beta Delta, JMU's international scholars honors society for several years.

Annick holds a bachelor's degree in Communication Media and Foreign Languages from The American University (Washington, D.C.); a master's degree (M.A.) in International and Area Studies (Intercultural Communication) from BYU; and a second master's (M.S.) in Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication from JMU. She is interested in college writing, technical writing, creative writing, intercultural communication, psychology and other communication issues.

Her work experience outside of JMU includes a stint at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. in the late 1980s (!); administrative work at AU in its ESL department; PR writing for the Kennedy Center for International Studies in early 1990s and doing work briefly as a freelance writer for a newspaper when her children were young. 

Annick has four daughters and a son. All have graduated from college as of May 2022 and have attended a variety of VA schools (UVA, VT, VMI, and JMU).

Annick loves to read and write. She is a fan of travel, fine dining, movies, museums, fiber arts and exercise. With her husband John, she enjoys hiking, evening walks and kayaking, and spending time on the banks of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River near their home.
