Admission to the School of Communication Studies

All students seeking admission to the School of Communication Studies as a major or minor must complete the following requirements:
  • have an overall GPA of at least 2.7
  • have a combined GPA of 2.7 in both SCOM 240 and SCOM 245
  • submit Declaration of Major form with application.
  • Declaration of Major form is not needed for those students who are changing from SCOM declared to SCOM fully admitted; for these student only the application is required.

Please click here to print the application.

Students interested in becoming SCOM majors must have completed or be in the process of completing two courses as required by the department before application can be submitted. These courses are “The Process of Human Communication” (SCOM 240) and “Signs, Symbols, and Social Interaction” (SCOM 245).

A student may apply to the School of Communication Studies in the middle of the semester during which he or she is taking the final course requirement needed for admission. This means that students may apply during the middle of: Fall Semester (by Fall Break), Spring Semester (by Spring Break), or Summer Sessions (between the two four-week sessions).

Once a student’s application is received by the department, a decision will be made as to acceptance after grades are posted at the end of the term during which the student applied (Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or the second four-week summer term). Students will be notified via
e-mail whether or not they have been accepted. Students who are admitted will be immediately assigned a faculty advisor. It is the student’s responsibility to contact that advisor soon after acceptance.

Once admitted to the School of Communication Studies a student cannot retroactively apply more than 9 hours of SCOM courses, including SCOM 240 and SCOM 245, to her/his major or minor program of study.

The nine-hour limitation does not apply to students transferring from other universities. Such transfer students may petition for SCOM credit for courses taken at previous universities.
