It is not necessary that you contact us about individuals with mobility issues unless you will be participating in the ceremony (i.e. you/they are the graduate). Please reference below for how mobility issues are addressed for all guests (parking and seating).
All requests for accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In order to facilitate the appropriate planning and provision of accommodations, please make your requests at least 3 weeks prior to Commencement by contacting us at
(540) 568-7787 or by e-mail.
Interpreter Services for the Deaf are provided. Please inform us of your need at least 3 weeks prior to Commencement by calling (540) 568-7787 or by e-mail.
Special parking is available near each college ceremony for vehicles with DMV issued handicapped license plates or permits. See the parking map for details on the location of the parking. We do not issue special parking permits, but depend upon those issued by the DMV, thus it is not necessary to contact us with parking needs.
For those who would rather stay closer to the college ceremonies and not attend the main ceremony in the stadium, we have three viewing areas to watch the main ceremony throughout campus. There are shuttles that are available to drop off at these locations from parking areas around the campus. The locations for viewing the main ceremony are in the auditorium of Wilson Hall, the ballroom in the Festival Center, and in the Convocation Center. This option is highly recommended for those preferring to be a little farther from the crowd.
A reserved area for persons with a walking disability or those using a wheelchair is available. Due to the large number attending and the limited space, seating is available for the person who needs the special seating and one accompanying guest or attendant. We do not reserve seating for specific guests and it is not necessary to contact us with seating needs, unless you require interpretive services for the deaf.
We have a number of guests contact us each year regarding wheelchair rental. While the university does not have wheelchairs available for guest use, there are a number of local medical equipment rental companies that may be able to assist you:
American Homepatient 540-433-8101 Roberts Home Medical 540-564-1194 Williamson & Hughes Home Health 540-434-2372
It has been our experience that it is often more convenient to rent a wheelchair from home and bring it with you rather than try and rent one in Harrisonburg.
