Accommodations for Persons
With Disabilities
All requests for accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In order to facilitate the appropriate planning and provision of accommodations, please make your requests at least 3 weeks prior to Commencement by contacting us at (540) 568-1644 or by e-mail. It is not necessary that you contact us about individuals with mobility issues unless they will be participating in the ceremony (i.e. they are the graduate). Please reference below for how mobility issues are addressed for all guests (parking and seating).
Interpreter
Service for the Deaf
are provided. Please inform us of your need as soon as possible by calling
(540) 568-1644 or by e-mail.
Handicapped Parking
Special parking is available near each college
ceremony for vehicles with DMV issued handicapped license plates or
permits. See the parking
map for
details on the location of the parking. We do not issue special parking permits, but depend upon those issued by the DMV, thus it is not necessary to contact us with parking needs.
Seating
A reserved area for persons using wheelchairs is available. Due to the large
number attending and the limited space, seating is available for the person who uses a wheelchair and one accompanying guest or attendant. We do not reserve seating for specific guests and it is not necessary to contact us with seating needs.
Elderly Passenger Drop-off Area
No other reserved parking or seating will be available, nor is there a shuttle service. Due to the
hilly terrain and the large number of elderly guests attending, there
will be a passenger drop-off area at each
of the college ceremony locations.
Wheelchair Rental
We have a number of guest contact us each year regarding wheelchair rental. While the university does not have wheelchairs available for guest use, there are a number of local medical equipment rental companies that may be able to assist you:
| American Homepatient |
540-433-8101 |
| Roberts Home Medical |
540-564-1194 |
| Williamson & Hughes Home Health |
540-434-2372 |
It has been our experience that it is often more convenient to rent a wheelchair from home and bring it with you rather than try and rent one in Harrisonburg.
