Students participate in a workshop that provides concrete experiences with water play, woodworking, unit blocks, and dramatic play. This opportunity for exploration is followed by a discussion that focuses on the learning and developmental opportunities in these kinds of experiences, as well as question-asking skills that support children's cognitive growth. The students complete extensive reading in the area of play and have an assignment that requires them to plan a meeting for the families of a fictitious kindergarten class on the importance of play in the early childhood curriculum.
