Competency Three

The educational professional describes and adapts interventions to varied learner styles, stages, development, purposes and needs.

An understanding of the developmental progressions, the ranges of individual variations within each cognitive, emotional, and physical domain, and how development in any one domain affects performance in others are essential for effective teachers and all other professional educators. They must also appreciate the uniqueness of each child and be committed to helping each develop self-confidence and competence. With knowledge of how children learn, instruction is designed to meet current developmental needs and lead children to the next level of development. Learning experiences are designed to help students reflect on prior knowledge and link new ideas to familiar ideas and experiences. Effective teachers and other educational professionals provide opportunities for active engagement with materials, concepts, people, and with manipulation and testing of ideas. They motivate students to assume responsibility for their own learning.
