English Requirements


To be licensed to teach secondary school English, the student must satisfactorily complete requirements for a baccalaureate degree in an arts and sciences discipline and at least 39 semester hours of credits in English, including the following courses or their equivalent. Grades of “C-“ or better are required.

A Genre and Theory course   (It is recommended that English education students take ENG 440 Texts for Teachers I which satisfies the genre requirement) 3
A Period course   (It is recommended that English education students take ENG 441 Texts for Teachers II which satisfies the period requirement) 3
An Alternative Canons course (It is recommended that English education students take GENG 239 Studies in World Literature – listed above - which satisfies the Alternative Canons requirement as well as the World Literature requirement) 3
