Candidates must take the Praxis II: Subject Assessment specialty area test in their respective licensure area, if one is required, prior to applying for a teaching license. The Virginia Board of Education has adopted new specialty area tests and new minimum scores for many of the teacher licensure areas. Changes in specialty area test requirements may occur over the next several years. Please make sure that you have the most current requirements before registering for a specialty area test.
Visit the Educational Testing Service website for registration information.
It is important to review subject content prior to taking the Praxis II tests. Visit the Educational Testing Service website to download the Tests at a Glance (TAAG) booklet for your subject area. TAAG provides information on the design and content of each test, as well as sample test items.
The table below contains the licensure programs offered at JMU and indicates the currently required tests and minimum scores.
NOTE: Only one Praxis II: Specialty Area Test is required even if you are being licensed in multiple areas, except in middle education (which requires two).
