Praxis I

There are two forms of the Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessments - the Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) and the Computerized Pre-Professional Skills Tests (C-PPST).  Both forms of the test assess reading, writing, and mathematical skills and are identical in content and design.  They differ only in test administration format; the PPST is a pencil-and-paper test, and the C-PPST is taken on the computer.

When Can I Take Praxis I?

ETS typically offers six regularly scheduled administrations of the PPST each year.  Although most administrations are available on the JMU campus, students may register to take the test at any regular ETS test administration site.

Students may also make an individual appointment to take the C-PPST at any Prometric test center.  Prometric centers in Virginia are located in Fairfax, Lynchburg, Newport News, and Roanoke.

What Are Passing Scores for Praxis I?

Passing scores on the Praxis I are set by the Virginia Board of Education, and all students completing licensure programs at JMU must meet this requirement before they are eligible to student teach.

A minimum composite score of 532, the sum of the minimum passing scores for the separate sections of the test (Reading 178; Writing 176; and Mathematics 178), is required on the pencil-and-paper form (PPST) or the computerized form (C-PPST) of Praxis I.  Scores from the two test formats may be combined.

NOTE:  Scores from the Reading, Writing, or Mathematics sections of the "old" Computer-Based Test (CBT) form of the Praxis I may still be used for Virginia licensure, but they cannot be combined with PPST or C-PPST scores to meet the composite score of 532.  ETS no longer administers the CBT.

Be sure to have your scores sent to JMU.  The Attending Institution & Recipient Code for JMU is 5392.
