The impact of early and elementary teachers on attitudes that will shape and preserve our world is without question. An EERE faculty initiative is seeking to support environmental sustainability in our personal and professional lives, as well as to model responsible choices for our students as future teachers. This is happening through conservation and recycling efforts within the department and classrooms, as well as through course content that supports teaching and learning about the critical topics of environmental education, conservation, recycling, and sustainabilty.

CoE Inaugural Earth Day Event
April 22, 2011

The CoE Green Committee hosted the first Earth Day Earth Day Display information table in Memorial Hall Forum on Friday, April 22, 2011. Members of the committee filled the table with recent children’s literature titles that address environmental education and artwork from recycled materials. Courtesy of the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World were free ‘Choose Environmental Stewardship’ and ‘JMU Go’ stickers, plus ‘Ten Ways to Green Up Your Home Tips’ from Habitat for Humanity. Students, staff and faculty who walked by were offered free materials and a ‘Happy Earth Day’ greeting.

Earth Day Stickers The CoE Green Committee will conduct a final tally of its recent collection project on the last day of classes, April 29^th. The “Used Writing Instruments” collection project is a collaborative project conducted with Terracycle, who will pay $.02 per piece. Recylced writing instruments will be upcycled into new products. Proceeds from the collection project will be donated to the Gus Bus.
